Garmin is pleased to introduce Smart Glide, a revolutionary
safety tool that helps the pilot in loss of engine power
emergencies by automating tasks to reduce pilot workload.
Smart Glide joins the Collier Trophy winning Garmin Autoland
as a part of the Autonomí™ family. In the event of the loss of
engine power in a single-engine aircraft, a pilot faces the urgent,
workload-intensive job of maneuvering the aircraft from its
current position to a suitable airport. Through compatible
avionics, such as GTN™ Xi series navigators, Smart Glide
provides assistance to the pilot by recommending a suitable
airport if estimated to be within glide range, as well as providing
critical information to the pilot and adjusting select avionics
settings. When paired with a compatible Garmin autopilot,
Smart Glide can automatically engage the autopilot and pitch for
the aircraft’s best glide speed while simultaneously navigating
the aircraft within the vicinity of the recommended airport (if
available) so the pilot can execute an approach and landing.

Smart Glide System Limitations

Smart Glide is an emergency assistance feature that provides the pilot with information during a loss of power emergency. This feature is intended to be used in emergency and training situations only. Smart Glide does not land the airplane and is not a substitute for proper planning and training. When able, Smart Glide directs the aircraft to a suitable airport nearby for landing based upon a variety of conditions, including, but not limited to, weather, distance from current position, terrain, and runway type. The airport list for Smart Glide, which is subject to update at any time, is comprised of any suitable airports within an estimated glide range based on the manufacturers published glide ratio and current aircraft glide performance. The airport list only contains airports that are found in the active navigation database. Smart Glide may not be able to locate an airport within glide range for aircraft that are flying at a low altitude and/or located in remote areas or over large bodies of water. Smart glide is not available after takeoff before reaching 1000ft above ground level (AGL) and cannot be activated above 36,000ft MSL. Smart Glide may not function without an adequate source of electrical power during a loss of engine power. Smart Glide also requires the Garmin avionics systems to be operation for the feature to operate properly.
